A tense standoff sparks snap elections

2017 began with the surprise announcement that Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness would be standing down immediately from his role as Northern Irish Deputy First Minister.

With Sinn Fein refusing to appoint a successor, his departure has collapsed the Executive and necessitated a fresh round of elections, less than a year after Northern Ireland last went to the polls.
