What's on the agenda this month
by Matthew Bentley, Monitoring Consultant
June is likely to be dominated by discussions on rail policy. Following the announcement in May that the East Coast rail franchise will be brought back into public ownership and continued disruption on Northern Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway services, politicians will undoubtedly be discussing the future of the rail franchising system.
In June the Government may publish their “Road to Zero” strategy for reducing emissions from road vehicles. This would following the publication of the Government’s Clean Air Strategy in May, which was criticised by some for lack of detail on transport emissions.
Meanwhile pressure is growing on the Government to hold a vote on airport expansion. MPs are due to vote on the Government’s Airports National Policy Statement this summer. In May business organisations sent an Open letter to the Prime Minster calling on the Government to “crack on with the vote on Heathrow expansion as soon as possible.
