Overview:

In May 2010, the British public went to the polls. Despite the Conservatives enjoying a lead in the polls for more than two years prior to the election, Britain returned a hung parliament for only the second time since 1945, leading to a wealth of questions about the future of British governance and the consequences for the economy.

The first term in office has by no means been plain sailing for the Coalition Government. With the only ministerial casualty to fall within days of the Coalition forming, followed by u-turns on forestries and wide public protests against tuition fees and public spending cuts, it has been a tumultuous year for the unexpected alliance.

More recently, the Liberal Democrats experienced significant losses at the local election and defeat on the referendum for AV while changes in Holyrood mean there are plenty of divisive issues waiting to frustrate this unexpected alliance.

This report provides an overview of these key political events, as well as identifying the upcoming trends for each Government department until 2015.
